Think it Through
Here are a few things to think about when considering battery storage:
Storage features
There are lots of makes and models of battery storage available in the UK today. They all differ from one another. These are some of the features you should ask about:
- Storage capacity – How much electricity can the battery hold and how much does my house need?
- Discharge rate – How much power can the battery deliver? How many home devices can I power simultaneously?
- Back-up power – Can the battery keep my whole home powered in a power-cut? Or just a few devices?
- Weather-proofing – Can the battery be installed outside? Will it work properly in the cold?
- Manufacturer – Will the manufacturer be around in the future? Is the warranty rock-solid?
VAT on battery storage
Battery storage can now be installed at 0% VAT for all home installations. Companies will still need to pay VAT @ 20%.
It used to be the case you could only secure 0% VAT on battery storage if you had it installed at the same time as solar panels. This is no longer true. You can get storage installed either before, during or after solar panels – and always enjoy VAT applied at 0%.
Solar battery storage
Ask your installer to show you their accreditation certificate for the battery technology they are installing, whether Tesla Powerwall or other brand. Not all manufacturers demand it, but best to be on the safe side.
Remember: solar panel battery storage allows you to capture excess solar electricity that would otherwise escape to the grid. You can then draw on that stored solar electricity in the evenings or at night when the sun isn't shining. Solar Panels + Battery Storage = being more energy independent.
You can also benefit from battery storage without solar PV panels. Batteries can be charged at night with cheap, off-peak electricity. That low-cost electricity can then be discharged to your home or EV during the day when rates are higher.
